basic info
name: rostyn aliases: none gender: male age: four years, five months breed: arctic wolf
alignment
area: starkwater quarry rank: trying for alpha
looks aren't everything
height: approximately 28 inches length: about five feet weight: about 115 pounds general build: fairly lean and muscular, around average size for a male coat color: white coat texture: soft, thick eyes: deep green, show a lot of emotion detailed appearance: Strong, wiry muscles hold Rostyn together and give him strenght. His body is lean and his muscles are more difficult to see than in some. Only when he is running or really working can you see them moving beneath his skin, making his body move whichever way he tells it too. Then it is obvious that he has stength, but before then you may not see that he could possibly do any kind of hard work. His frame looks thin and weak, especially during the summer when he loses much of his thick fur to stay cool. During the winter it is harder to see just how thin he can look. He is about sixty pounds beneath the average weight for a male of his species and age. His height and length are a little bit more average, and even perhaps above average. His large paws can, at times, seem disproportionate to his body. In the winter, when he looks bigger, they seem to match his body a little more, but when he loses his fur in the summer he looks as if he is wearing big, paw-shaped slippers.
Rostyn tends to be just slightly vain about his fur. He likes it when it feels soft and looks clean. The white doesn't have a single other color in it until you get around his face, where there is black around his nose, eyes, and mouth. It is about medium, though it borders being considered long fur. The fur on his tail is longer than the rest and gets a lot dirtier, so he spends more time cleaning it than he does anywhere else. The fur around his face and ears is short, and almost fuzzy, though still soft. Some have called him handsome, others simply normal. Whatever he is, he has more than enough fur for one creature to carry. It is very thick and layered over and over again. That might be useful during the winter and maybe even late fall and early spring, but in the warmer seasons it tends to keep him just a little too warm, forcing him to retreat to places where he can more easily cool down. It isn't uncommon to find him in the shade of a tree near a river around then. His eyes seem to go well with his fur, though it is said that white matches anything. Their green depths are dark, like the green that people often associate with Christmas. It would match the color red with ease, just as it matches the white. In those eyes you can see the intelligence that lies beneath all of the strange oddities and habits of this very different wolf.
this is who I am
general demeanor: laid back, neutral, indifferent, intelligent habits: joking around, pretending not to care, playing mind games on others hobbies: no real hobbies likes: wolves with personality to them, pups, wolves he gets along with dislikes: those who think they are better than everyone, those who are rude, those who are determined to ignore what he says negatives: he tends not to care about certain imprortant matters, he is always quick to play a mind game on someone not matter what, he doesn't seem serious at times detailed personality: Rostyn is, to say the least, laid back and seemingly uncaring most of the time. On the outside he looks like the kind of wolf who would sleep through an atomic bomb, at least on first impressions. But other times he seems like the kind of wolf who might try to cleverly joke his way through every kind of situation. He might even appear to be predictable, but that's exactly what he wants you to think. As soon as you think you have his personality pinned down he changes the rules and plays some strange move that confuses you all over again. One of his favorite sayings happens to be, "What good is a predictable wolf?" They make life boring, accoding to him. He makes things interesting. Obviously, he isn't the kind of wolf you might be inclined to take seriously, unless you know him very, very well. Isn't it a shame that he doesn't do too well in relationships? But that probably isn't a surprise.
Rostyn's the wolf who would ignore you when he felt like it, even if you had the most exciting news in the world. I dare you to walk up to him and say, "Hey Rostyn, guess what? You just became ruler of the world!" He would probably open one eye, if he was napping, look at you, mutter something unintelligible, and they go back to sleep. Honestly, he would want to become ruler of the world, so this should be the expected reaction to that statement, at least if you know him well enough to realize that. It may seem that he just doesn't care or that he might even be lazy, but that isn't the case at all. You see, Rostyn has developed excellent control over his emotions and reactions. If he wants to react in a certain way to a certain situation then you know that he will. He learned to exercise this kind of control at a young age, though the reason for that is unknown to even him. He was always a laid-back, calm pup, so perhaps that was where the control originated. He definately wasn't normal, not in the least. He wasn't the hyperactive pup who always ran around with the other pups in the pack. He was a loner who kept to himself. Now he doesn't isolate himself as much, and even finds himself seeking the company of others. He may not seem mature at times, but he knows how to take control of a situation and guide others through them. His calm demeanor gives him a cool head, even in the most stressful situations, an asset to any wolf who seeks leadership. He doesn't so much seek leadership, as some do, but he is willing to take the chance if the oppurtunity arises. He would make a good leader, for all that he has convinced himself that he never would.
what made me
mother: ice [deceased] father: drathalf sisters: talyn [deceased], unnamed [deceased] brothers: unnamed [deceased] other relatives: yilanya [adoptive mother] defining events: death of his sister, running away from his father and "mother" detailed history: Rostyn and his sister Talyn were born to a female called Ice. She was a loner who had been traveling for two years. Lack of food and rest in recent months had made her grow weak, and she could barely move when a male named Drathalf found her. He brought her back from the brink of death, and she quickly began to fall in love with him after that. He played along, courting her and pretending as if he, too, loved her. One day Ice announced that she was pregnant, and the pair was overjoyed. It was only a short time later that four pups were born. Rostyn was one of two males, though the other was a stillborn, and his two sisters were Talyn and a weak female that was never named before she died a few days after birth. Ice raised them lovingly, and Drathalf still played along with things, helping to care for the pups and raise them. When the time came for Rostyn and Talyn to be weaned a strange female came into the area and stayed with the couple and their offspring for a few nights. When the pups no longer relied on their mother's milk, Drathalf led them away to explore. The female, who was called Yilanya, was left alone with Ice, who was still weak from the birth of her pups. She had never recovered from the hard labor, and she feared that her life was coming to an end. She never realized, however, that Yilanya was the one who would bring about that death. It was quick, but bloody. When Drathalf and the two pups returned, Yilanya was gone and their mother lay dead. Drathalf pretended to be upset and claimed that it must have been a bear attack, or a strange male wolf that had come along. Just then Yilanya pretended to return from an outing. Upon seeing Ice's mangled body she acted as if she was horrified and went to Drathalf for comfort. They buried Ice, to appease the deeply upset pups, and then the four left the area.
Drathalf and Yilanya had been mates before Ice had even come into the picture. Yilanya was unable to have her own pups, so she demanded that Drathalf get her some. That was the part that Ice had played. Now Yilanya had two pups who had just lost their mother and needed a new parental figure. She quickly took over the raising of the pups and began to teach them how to fend for themself. Talyn was quick to accept her new adoptive mother, but Rostyn was uncertain and never trusted his father or the female. He isolated himself from the rest of his family and often refused to take part in anything other than the lessons that Yilanya taught both of the pups.
They grew fast and before long they were learning how to hunt. Rostyn had the ability to quickly master the skill, but Talyn fumbled and never quite mastered hunting. Finally, however, their parents told them to go out to hunt alone. Rostyn ran the hunt, making sure that Talyn got the least dangerous parts because of her inability to hunt well. However, even with these precations he couldn't keep his younger sister out of harm;s way. While they chased after a herd of deer, trying to single a doe out of the herd, the buck that watched over them came to fight the wolves. He targeted Talyn, who was quick to take up the challenge and meet the buck head on. She was kicked in the head by one of the dangerously strong hooves and flung several meters away from the buck. Rostyn retreated, letting the herd escape, then slowly inched toward his unmoving sister. When he reached her he felt her body, searching for signs of life without finding any. Sadness overtook his body and he sat down beside his sister, lifting his head and howling to the sky. His father and Yilanya heard him and quickly came. They buried his sister the next day.
Two nights later, while Rostyn pretended to sleep, Drathalf and Yilanya began to talk about the plan that had been created to trick Ice into having Drathalf's pups. Rostyn heard the entire story. When the two adults went to bed that night he quietly snuck away. When Drathalf and Yilanya awoke that morning, he was miles away. Only a yearling, Rostyn decided that it was time for him to leave the nest and get out into the real world. Apart from his immediate family, he had seen only two other wolves, one of them being Yilanya. He figured that it was time he move on and experience the real world of wolves. When he was just a little more than three years old he stumbled upon this area of the island, a place he hadn't seen before. He wasn't sure. He had come from somewhere just near the Sierra Mountains, and all the while a world filled with wolves had awaited him. If he had known this long ago he would have left his father for this place, for there was much more to do here than in the secluded areas where he had once been forced to stay.
what else is there to know?
other: nothing more to say about 'im author comments: Rostyn has always been a favorite wherever I take him. I love him too, but I never did understand why people liked him so much. His original form on Everfrost was always much more appealing to me than any other form, but he's always been a good character, especially as a wolf or a human.
